onteora House and garden
Onteora, New York
This project included a house renovation and a new master bedroom addition as well as a landscape for the weekend house of a New York City restaurant owner. The house was formerly the gardener’s and chauffeur’s cottage for a large summer home in a 1920s artists’ community. The house sits close to a public road on the east screened by an existing stone wall. The site slopes steeply down toward the building on the west. The landscape design and new building additions open the house up to the landscape as never before. A series of curving stone walls form a terraced garden greatly expanding the usable site. A new pergola is added stretching the full length of the building and linking the indoor spaces to the garden beyond. The master bedroom wing has a veranda looking out onto a new raised lawn terrace. Additional landscape features include a vegetable garden, grove of large trees and a wildflower meadow.
